AIR 6000+ to AIR 544 | How to Crack GATE Without Coaching? by Geethu Talks | Code Bridge

Hello everyone! Welcome to another inspiring post on Geethu Talks and codebridg.in.

Many engineering students dream of getting into top IITs, but they often wonder if it’s possible to crack the GATE exam without expensive coaching. In our recent podcast episode, we sat down with Pavan Kumar, who secured All India Rank (AIR) 544 in GATE CSE 2026. He is a final-year Computer Science and Business Systems (CSBS) student at Vishnu Institute of Technology, Bhimavaram.

Here is a complete breakdown of his journey, preparation strategy, and the free resources he used. This blog is written in simple, basic English so that every student can easily understand and apply these tips!

1. The Motivation: Why GATE Over a Job?

Pavan comes from a Navodaya school background. Due to the CBSE curriculum limitations there, he couldn’t prepare for JEE during his 12th grade. The dream of studying in an IIT always stayed with him. Instead of settling, he decided to aim for GATE to pursue his Master’s in a top IIT and secure a high-paying placement.

2. The Preparation Journey (3rd Year vs. 4th Year)

Pavan started his preparation in his 3rd year of B.Tech.

  • 3rd Year Attempt: He prepared by simply watching YouTube lectures and solving Previous Year Questions (PYQs). He wasn’t able to complete the entire syllabus for two subjects (Engineering Mathematics and Discrete Mathematics) before the exam, but he still managed to score an AIR of 6500.
  • 4th Year Attempt: Realizing his potential, he fully dedicated his 4th year to GATE. He analyzed his weak concepts, fixed his silly mistakes, and heavily focused on giving mock tests. This jump-started his rank to AIR 544.

3. Important Subjects & Difficulty Level for CSE

GATE CSE has a huge syllabus with around 12 subjects. Pavan categorizes them based on their difficulty:

  • Easy & Scoring: C Programming, Data Structures, and DBMS.
  • High Weightage but Huge Syllabus: Computer Networks (CN).
  • Logical & Tough: Theory of Computation (TOC), Compiler Design (CD), and Discrete Mathematics. TOC and CD have a smaller syllabus but require a lot of logical thinking.
  • Moderate: Digital Logic and Computer Organization & Architecture (COA). COA is highly repetitive if you understand the core concepts.

4. Free Resources & Finding the Best Teachers

You do not need paid coaching to crack GATE! Pavan solely relied on free YouTube resources.

  • The “Best Educator” Strategy: Instead of blindly following one single YouTube channel, search for the best educator for each specific subject.
  • Different platforms like Physics Wallah, Made Easy, Unacademy, and GO Classes have excellent teachers for different subjects. Find free Excel sheets on YouTube that compile the best free lecture links and follow them.

5. The Golden Rule: PYQs and Test Series

According to Pavan, Previous Year Questions (PYQs) make up 50% to 60% of your preparation. GATE CSE frequently repeats question models.

  • Where to find PYQs: Use the “GATE Overflow” website or subject-wise PYQ books.
  • Test Series (The remaining 40%): Mock tests are crucial to clear your concepts and test your knowledge. Pavan used the ACE Engineering Academy test series, but he also recommends Made Easy and GO Classes (though GO Classes can be slightly tougher than the actual GATE exam).

6. Exam Day Mindset & Time Management

  • Time Management: In GATE CSE, you get 3 hours for 65 questions. Time is usually never a problem.
  • Silly Mistakes: The real danger is panicking. Pavan admits he lost around 8 to 10 marks just because of silly mistakes in subjects like Computer Networks where the question was slightly twisted. Stay calm and read the questions carefully.

7. Is GATE Worth It for Tier-3 College Students?

If you already have a 6 to 7 LPA on-campus job offer, should you still write GATE?

Pavan says YES, especially if you are from a Tier-3 college. Top IITs and NITs offer average packages of 20 to 25 LPA. Along with the “IIT Tag,” you get a massive alumni network and better career growth. However, this decision also depends on your family’s financial situation and your patience to study for two more years.

8. The Perfect 10-Month Roadmap for Beginners

If you want to start your preparation now, here is a simple roadmap:

  • May to November: Focus completely on finishing the syllabus for all 12 subjects. Watch lectures and make short notes.
  • November to January: Stop studying new concepts. Spend these 3 months purely on solving PYQs and giving Test Series.
  • Balancing College & Tech Skills: Don’t worry about missing out on learning coding, DSA, or AI/ML during your GATE prep. The GATE exam happens in February. After the exam, you have 5 to 6 months of free time before your M.Tech classes start in July or August. You can easily learn new software skills during that free time!
